How to Memorize the Quran: 12 Proven Hifz Tips for Kids and Adults

By Quran Home Online teachers · · 9 min read

Quick answer

The most reliable way to memorize the Quran is the three-part daily system used in madrasas for centuries: a new lesson (Sabaq), revision of the last 7–10 lessons (Sabqi), and revision of older portions (Manzil). Memorize at a fixed time, ideally after Fajr, use the same printed Mushaf every day, and recite to a teacher daily.

The Sabaq, Sabqi and Manzil system

Forgetting is the main problem in Hifz, not memorizing. This system gives old portions as much attention as new ones:

PartWhat it isDaily amount (example)
Sabaq (سبق)Today's new lesson3–10 lines, or half to one page
Sabqi (سبقی)The lessons from the last 1–2 weeks2–5 pages
Manzil (منزل)Older memorized Juz in rotation¼ to 1 Juz

A student who memorizes fast but skips Manzil will lose earlier Juz within months. Our online Hifz course includes all three in every class.

12 tips that work

  1. Correct your Tajweed first. Memorizing mistakes is easy; un-memorizing them is hard. Fluent Nazra and basic Tajweed come before Hifz.
  2. Use one Mushaf only. Your memory records the page layout. The 15-line (Madani or South Asian) Mushaf, where every Juz begins on a new page, is the most popular choice for Huffaz.
  3. Memorize after Fajr. The mind is fresh and the house is quiet. Many teachers set the Sabaq for this time.
  4. Listen before you read. Listen to the new portion 5–10 times from a slow Qari to fix the sound in your ear.
  5. Break it down. Memorize one verse at a time, then join verse 1 + 2, then 1 + 2 + 3, and so on.
  6. Repeat a set number of times. A common method is to read each verse 20 times looking, then 20 times from memory.
  7. Recite in Salah. Use newly memorized verses in your Sunnah and Nafl prayers. It is the best revision there is.
  8. Recite to a teacher daily. You will not hear your own mistakes. A teacher catches them the same day.
  9. Understand what you memorize. Knowing the meaning of a passage, even in summary, makes it easier to hold. Tarjuma helps here.
  10. Guard the similar verses (Mutashabihat). Keep a notebook of verses that look alike and review them weekly.
  11. Keep a steady target. Half a page daily, done every day, finishes the Quran in about 3½ years. Consistency beats bursts.
  12. Make sincere Dua. Ask Allah to make the Quran easy for you and to keep it in your heart.

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ

“And We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember, so is there anyone who will be mindful?”

Surah Al-Qamar 54:17

How long will Hifz take?

New lines a day (15-line Mushaf)Days a weekApproximate time for 604 pages
5 lines (⅓ page)5about 7 years
8 lines (½ page)5about 4½ years
15 lines (1 page)5about 2⅓ years
15 lines (1 page)6about 2 years

These figures are for new lessons only and assume no long breaks. Holidays and revision weeks add time, and that is normal.

Hifz for adults

Adults memorize well too; they simply have less free time. Start with the surahs you use most: Juz 'Amma, then Al-Mulk, Yaseen, Al-Kahf and the last verses of Al-Baqarah. Twenty focused minutes a day after Fajr is enough to make steady progress.

How parents can help

  • Protect the Hifz time from screens and visitors.
  • Listen to your child's Sabaq before class, even if you are not a Hafiz yourself; just follow along in the Mushaf.
  • Celebrate every completed Juz.
  • Check the monthly progress report and talk to the teacher if revision is slipping.

Common questions

What is the best age to start Hifz?

Many children start between 6 and 10, once they read the Quran fluently. There is no upper limit; adults memorize successfully at any age.

How many hours a day should a Hifz student study?

Full-time students often spend 3–5 hours a day. Part-time students with school usually do 1–2 hours, including a one-hour class and home revision.

How do I stop forgetting what I memorized?

Do Manzil every day, recite memorized portions in your prayers, and recite to a teacher regularly. Forgetting is almost always a sign that revision has been skipped.

Can Hifz be done online?

Yes. A teacher can hear every word over a video call, set the daily Sabaq and check Sabqi and Manzil just as in a madrasa.
