Noorani Qaida: A Complete Beginner's Guide to Reading the Quran

By Quran Home Online teachers · · 8 min read

Quick answer

Noorani Qaida is the beginner's book used worldwide to learn to read the Quran. It moves from single Arabic letters to joined letters, vowel marks (Harakat), Tanween, Madd, Sukoon and Shaddah, so that by the end a student can read any page of the Quran. Most children finish it in 3–4 months with five short classes a week; adults are often faster.

What is Noorani Qaida?

Noorani Qaida is a short primer compiled by Sheikh Noor Muhammad Ludhianvi in the Indian subcontinent. It is now used in homes, masjids and online academies around the world because it teaches reading in small, logical steps. Each lesson adds one new idea and practices it until the sound becomes automatic.

The book does not teach meanings. Its only job is to teach you to pronounce and read the Arabic script of the Quran correctly. Understanding the meaning comes later, in Tarjuma and Tafseer.

What each stage teaches

Editions differ slightly, but most have about 17 lessons grouped into these stages:

  1. Single letters (Huroof Mufradat)The 29 letters from ا to ي, each pronounced from its correct place in the mouth or throat.
  2. Joined letters (Huroof Murakkabat)How letters change shape at the start, middle and end of a word, e.g. بـ ـبـ ـب.
  3. Short vowels (Harakat)Fatha (a), Kasra (i) and Damma (u): بَ بِ بُ.
  4. TanweenDoubled vowel marks that add an “n” sound: بً بٍ بٌ.
  5. Long vowels (Madd letters)Alif, Waw and Ya that stretch a vowel for two counts: بَا بِي بُو.
  6. Sukoon and ShaddahA letter with no vowel (اَبْ) and a doubled letter (رَبَّ).
  7. Practice with Quranic wordsFull words and short verses, with the first Tajweed rules such as Ghunnah and Qalqalah.

How long does Noorani Qaida take?

StudentClasses a weekTypical time
Child, age 4–65 × 20–30 min4–6 months
Child, age 7–125 × 30 min3–4 months
Adult or revert3–5 × 30 min2–3 months

The biggest factor is daily revision. Ten minutes of reading the last lesson aloud every evening can halve the time needed.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Rushing ahead. Moving to the next page before the current one is smooth creates gaps that show up later in Quran reading.
  • Mixing similar letters. ث / س / ص, ذ / ز / ظ, ح / ه and ع / ء sound close to English speakers. Ask the teacher to drill these pairs.
  • Reading without the teacher hearing. Self-study apps help revision, but only a teacher can hear and correct pronunciation.
  • Stretching every vowel. Short vowels are short; only Madd letters are stretched.

How parents can help at home

  • Sit with your child for five minutes after each class and ask them to read the new line to you.
  • Praise effort, not speed.
  • Keep the Qaida in the same place every day so it becomes a routine.
  • If you cannot read yourself, learn alongside your child. Many parents do.

What comes after the Qaida?

Once the Qaida is finished, students begin reading from the Quran itself, usually starting with Juz 'Amma, the 30th part, whose short surahs are recited in daily prayer. This is the Nazra stage. Students who want to perfect their pronunciation continue with Tajweed.

خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ

“The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5027

Common questions

What age should a child start Noorani Qaida?

Most children are ready at age 4 or 5, when they can sit and focus for 15–20 minutes. Start with short classes and a patient teacher.

Can an adult learn Noorani Qaida?

Yes. Adults and reverts usually finish in 2–3 months because they can practice on their own between classes.

Is Noorani Qaida the same as Yassarnal Quran?

They are two different beginner books with the same purpose. Both teach reading step by step; the choice usually depends on what is common in your family's region.

Can I learn Noorani Qaida without a teacher?

You can revise alone, but the correct sound of letters such as ع, ح, ق and ض needs a teacher who can hear you and correct you.
